Thank you for your support during the first part of 2024. The outpouring of support we received from dedicated donors is wonderful and inspiring.  Southern Harbor House is an essential resource for our island community and we are grateful for your commitment to our mission. Thank you again for your partnership! We hope you will come visit us soon.

Located on the island of North Haven, one of the Fox Islands in Midcoast Maine, Southern Harbor House was founded on the belief that elders should remain part of their community.

We seek to create a comfortable, safe and nurturing environment for community elders who would otherwise be displaced from their island homes in the absence of care giving resources. Our philosophy is fundamentally based in the essential qualities of our close-knit community and focuses on person-centered care.

Southern Harbor House is surrounded by picturesque harbor views, rolling meadows and is situated in close proximity to town, which supports community and resident engagement in social activities occurring at Southern Harbor House and elsewhere in town.

Caring
for our
elders.

2022-2023 Volunteer of the Year

Determined Campus Beautifier

Priscilla Kennedy is the 2022-2023 Volunteer of the Year. After rescuing our courtyard garden space, and brightening our front walkway, Pricilla’s dedication and devotion to campus beatification for the enjoyment of the residents and their friends and loved ones is testament to the impact volunteers have on the day to day experience. Thank you, Pricilla for your fine work and kind heartedness.

2021-2022 Volunteer of the Year

Heartfelt Kitchen Wizard

Once a year our team of healthcare workers at Southern Harbor House nominate one person to be recognized as our Volunteer of the Year. Volunteers bring vibrancy, creativity, and joy into the environment as well as into the lives of our residents. While all our volunteers are incredibly special, and our program would not have as much depth without them, the recognition of Volunteer of the Year is an opportunity to take the time to appreciate a specific member of our community who has gone above and beyond ordinary expectations. We joyfully announce our 2021 Volunteer of the Year, Don Pearson. Don has dedicated numerous hours to offer his culinary support in the kitchen at Southern Harbor House. Helping to prepare meals not only provided vital assistance to the team, his presence offered a new dynamic dimension to the resident experience. We are indebted to Don for sharing and caring so much. Don wrote a note to the Team upon receiving news that he was nominated Volunteer of the Year and said, “…Whether it’s puttering around outside or in the kitchen, or chatting with the residents or the staff, or being instructed in the finer points of cribbage or out on a field trip, it all seems effortless and very satisfying to me. I really do treasure my time spent at “The House!”

Thank you, Don! For turning so many ordinary days into extraordinary memories.

History of North Haven and Southern Harbor House.

North Haven is one of fourteen unbridged, year-round island communities off the coast of Maine. The creation of Southern Harbor House was a collaboration between several island organizations with a goal of keeping island elders in their community.

Island partnerships

In early January we hosted our island friends and neighbors for the Maine Seacoast Mission's Inter Island Eldercare Conference. This conference has been going on for over a decade. We have spent years working to support each other and we continue to do that now. It was a wonderful experience to have everyone here on North Haven. We look forward to remaining a part of this group for many more years.

Many thanks to Sharon Daley at the Maine Seacoast Mission. She nurtured this idea years ago and now it has grown into a reliable network of dedicated island caregivers. Margaret Snell assists her with organizing and arranging for the fabulous, informative presenters. Their efforts are underscored through the dedication of the Maine Seacoast Mission. We could not be more grateful for their support. Thank you!
